About

So what’s a Jetset-Gipsy*? A 20th Century nomad with no fixed abode.  Yes, I have temporarily left my flat and job in London to come here to Arusha, Tanzania where I will be briefly volunteering with the Tanzania Capital Boosting Association.  A small local microfinance organisation that is providing small loans to the unbanked, poor but remarkably enterprising people of Arusha.  I want to share some of the stories, before I return.

*Credit please to my friend and colleague Julian for coining the phrase jetset-gipsy; what is fast becoming the web’s best-loved blog name.

  1. Good start and I get a mention. Sweet! One day I will board like Wency. She’s had so many mentions it sounds like she’s your girlfriend. Good Luck

  2. I have to admit I prefer the name Jetset-Gypo.

Hope you have offset your carbon emissions, you environment killer!

  3. Who’s the strange Chinese guy who falls over in the middle. Looks familiar but can’t quite place him. Maybe I should give him a few snowboarding lessons.

  4. Anyone see the mad girl trying to drink hot shots with no hands…what a weirdo!!
…Quick tips..never overtake Manoj on the slopes as he will take you out….wait for drag-lift James on uphill sections…

  5. So much activity in such a short time. Pleased to see you have been adopted and being taken care of. Does the 14 year old know how successful you have been in finding a girlfriend? You had better mention it may take some time! Take care.

  6. I can’t believe that you found porridge (“uji”) in Tanzania…
Thought it would be a Zebra or Elephant milk, but porridge?!?

Nicola and Nigel should conduct some serious research and find out how it found it’s way all the way from Scotland.

Otherwise, very impressive country – wish I could join you for few days… and try “uji”.

  7. Love reading about all your adventures James! Keep ‘em coming! E x

  8. alright fatty, you managed to get down to a normal bmi yet? you look like you’re doing well and still moaning from time to time i see. when are you back? I’m working up in glasgow during the week until the end of june. keep it coming miller x

  9. Hey Professor Miller! Great to be able to follow your adventures :-) You should give a serious thought about changing your career into travel writer… How is your tanning plan going? ;-) How hot does it get over there? Do they have good sunsets? Have you got anywhere to go for a swim? Keep on enjoying lucky man!!

  10. James,

First things first you have not yet mentioned the weather and what you are eating (other than porridge), both these questions are frequently being asked about by our grandmothers, they are concerned that you are not eating properly and probably very sun burnt!! please could you confirm that you are ok?

The wildlife looks great, although on showing Archie the pictures of the giraffe’s his first question was ‘Did uncle James feed them like we did at the zoo?’ and his second comment was ‘Uncle James is going to bring one home for Archie!’ this is your challenge to make an almost 3 year old very happy!

    Continue the good work……

  11. Yes, James people back here in rural Suffolk keep asking whether it is raining in Arusha…was it worth all that money on waterproofs?! Also, what interesting food are you eating? As for “uji” it sounds ….! Apart from not mentioning such mundane things your reports are great to follow but there’s not enough of them! Which means of course that you are too busy enjoying yourself – good. Oh, Archie says that he has fed a giraffe … have you? He would like Uncle James to bring him one back!

  12. As I don’t have your hotmail address I thought I’d better post a note on this!!

I understand you may require a lift back from the station tomorrow sometime, any idea as to when it may be? Mark is working in Welwyn tomorrow so you may be able to coincide with his trip back. I’m out tomorrow afternoon for a couple of hours but you can get me on my mobile if not.

Remember there is nothing to eat at the Farm as they’re away, but you are welcome to eat here if you require, just let me know!

    Have a good trip back!

  13. Hey!
Finally had the time to loo at your blog while my daughter’s brithday cake is burning in the oven…
    Well done!
Once you are fed up with auditing and farming, you can always try your luck as a writer.
    When are you back?
    Cheers
    Sophie
